Packer Time Out: The Andrew Luck Retirement
OK, let us take a moment to move outside our Packer World and discuss the reaction to the
Andrew Luck Retirement.
Now, if you are reading this, have you ever had to make a BIG decision? Buy a house, leave a job to start a new job, ask someone to marry you, maybe retirement?? How many people did it have an impact on, 3, 4, ......?? Now magnify your decision 50,000, 100,000, or 2-3 million fans?? And, remember what the word "fan" is short for - "FANATIC"!
My comments:
1 - Football Fans are not normal people! Especially, at the beginning of the year! Fans are ready!! Some fans are season ticket holders, have 20 hats of their team & 10 t-shirts! They set aside a day for their team. They travel to see their team. They may even get married in the stadium (I was present at one in Green Bay!) Therefore, the booing, or the tweets, during the first 24 hours are not really important. Give them time!
2 - News Leaks! Not only does our own government have "leak issues", sports teams & players have issues with leaks! This is NOT a good societal thing!!
3 - An athlete and the MENTAL & PHYSICAL approach to the sport! It is VERY difficult to fight physical issues for many years! And, to be mentally ready is of equal importance. My example, as a retired educator? To step in that classroom every day for 1-0, 20, 30 years takes mental strength! And, at times, it is NOT easy and..... for some a time to leave the classroom. To be a superior athlete you need BOTH mental & physical excellence!
4 - Your personal physical & mental health comes first!! Andrew Luck is a VERY smart young man! He is planning for the next 40 to 50 years! You need to make decisions that are sometimes best for you!
5 - And, last family! If Andrew Luck is healthy & happy - his family will be healthy & happy! A wife & children always should come before, job or team.
So, Andrew Luck, enjoy your retirement from football! I'm sure another career is around the corner!

First Attempt at Packer 53 Man Roster
Before I get into the Packer Roster, I am watching the Steelers-Titans pre-season game & watched the Steelers starting offense go two series in the first quarter. I am still "old school" and believe the Packers are crazy for not a least playing ONE series with Rodgers!

QB: Aaron Rodgers & Tim Boyle
RB: Aaron Jones, Jamaal Williams, & Dexter Williams

Packers Pre-Season Game #3 - What a Mess!
A few years back, the Packer Buddies headed to Canton, Ohio, to the Football Hall of Fame. The Pack was playing in the 1st Pre-Season Game & we were touring the Hall of Fame! We get to the game, teams come out on the field, and NO GAME! The PAINT on the field was still wet. They tried to remove it and made the field worse!! NO GAME! We headed back to Pennsylvania!
Now, NFL has a good idea - Winnipeg, Canada! Play a game on the field of a Canadian Football Team! Hey wait, they field is not the same size, need to more the goal posts. Not happy with the field, oh well, just play on an 80 yard field! Crazy!
Just a NOTE: NFL, I know you want to grow the sport, but, PLEASE, do your homework first!
Back to the game, I am sticking to the GOOD, BAD, & UGLY theme!!
GOOD!
QB, Tim Boyle. To this "eye of a fan" Boyle is now #2! Like his poise. Love the arm. And,
produces results!
BAD!
33 players sit out! I still think, protecting these people makes for poor quality when the season starts! Aaron Rogers for one, has not been as sharp the past few years. The concept of players getting injured may be a result of NOT going full speed enough in game situations, practice, etc. All I know, is no matter how little they practice full speed, full contact, the still get INJURED!! And that,
of course leads to the...............
UGLY!
Rashan Gary, starts to show some life and gets HURT!!!! We hope it is not serious!!!
So, overall, how do you feel about the Packers of 2019?? I, feel VEY uneasy! On paper, we have some positive - Rodgers, is still very good. Aaron Jones should run for over 1000 yards. Davante Adams should go over 1000 yards & score 15 TD's! Our left tackle, Bakhtiari, should be an All-Pro again. Our defensive backs are young & ready & should be GOOD! Pass rush should be better!
Looks like a lot of SHOULDS!

Packers Preseason Game#2 - The Good, The Bad & The Ugly!
We could use a young Clint Eastwood on this roster, but since we do not, let us use one of my favorite East movies!
The Good?
Jake Kumerow - this young man WILL have a good year. He has great size, 6'4 & 209 lbs. He gets separation! He seems to catch the football (one miss last night). And, MOST important, he seems to have Aaron Rodgers trust.
The Bad?
Tackling!!!! If we were playing two hand touch, we would be freaking awesome!! The players gat to the ball, BUT............. Since it seems to be a team epidemic!! So, I attribute it to taking it easy in practice to avoid injury. I AM SO SICK & TIRED OF PACKERS GETTING HURT!!!! So, I put the blame on the coaching staff. (By the way, this was an issue under Coach McCarthy)
The Ugly?
Preseason football! In general, what a waste of time!!! My idea. Players come to camp in shape! In the old days, 1960's, even into the 70's, players worked themselves in shape. We have OTA's, all year round personal trainers & players make enough money so the DO NOT NEED a part time job in the off season! So,
1 - Two preseason games
2 - Stay with 16 games, but each team gets 2 bye weeks. Start playing before Labor Day.
3 - Increase the roster from 53 to 60 players.
4 - If someone is on Injured Reserve, they can come back anytime. Limit is 5 players allowed.
5 - Introduce a minor league schedule, 32 teams, 10-12 games, play Wednesday Nights. Start two weeks into the season, end two weeks before the end of the season. Take the place of the 10 team practice squad, 40-50 players on the teams.
OK, next preseason games, KISS Method(Keep It Simple Stupid)
Tackle
No Penalties
And, Aaron Rodgers - play one quarter of football!!

Packers - Ravens, What to Look For in Pre-Season Game #2
OK, let the auditions continue, and just like the "Voice" & "American Idol", do the Packers have talent??
Here is my "Watch List"
1 - Apparently, the "starters" are playing in Quarter 1. So,..............
a. What will Aaron look like with his receivers & who will those receivers be??
b. Defense - I'm looking for a "SWAGGER"!
2 - Kicking battle - do we have one??
3 - Depth - needs will be......
a. Linebackers, especially inside
b. Offensive Line
c. Back to Wide Receiver?? This looks like a BIG Battle!
d. Special Team Players - return man that is explosive on kick & punt returns
e. The overall attitude & body language on the field.
The Raven have two VERY interesting issues for the Packers:
1 - The Raven Offense has a college type offense & QB's that can move!
2 - The Ravens Defense is ALWAYS very good, how will Packer Offense Look??
GO PACK GO!

Three Players That Made An Impact for the 53 Man Roster
Pre-Season Games give players a chance to make the final roster. What 3 players impressed me??
1 - Allen Lazard - 6'5" 227 lbs - 1 yr experience - 23 age
Love the size and his ability to get open in the middle of the field & the end zone. Is a BIG plus as a special teams player. In his interviews is very impressive & says all the right things!
2 - Ty Summers - 6'1" 241 lbs - Rookie - 23 age
Made a lot of tackles in the first pre-season game! With Oren Burks suffering an injury, we will need help at inside linebacker!
3 - Sam Ficken - 6'1" 192 lbs - 1 yr experience - 26 age
I just have that feeling! No Jordy, No Clay, No Randall, maybe NO Mason??

Preseason Game #1 - Texans vs Packers
OK, I know most of the starters were watching, but, what did we learn in the Packer first pre-season game?
1 - Missed tackles. Packers, overall are still VERY poor tacklers!
2 - Back-up running backs & running game, maybe Dexter Williams. But, not an exciting break away threat. And, offensive linemen we average a best.
3 - Wide Receiver depth? I liked Allen Lazard. Athletic, 6'5" & good hands. Darrius Shepherd showed some ability to get seperation. We are hoping eventually Valdes-Scantling, Allison, & Kumerow will make Aaron VERY happy! But, more depth & completion is welcomed!
4 - Kizner & Boyle looked more polished, but, not playoffs with these two!
5 - Pass rush, NOT YET!
6 - D-Backs, some depth here & a first look, playmakers & turnover creators!
7 - Coaching - still like the press conferences. As far as changes for the best, too early.
Still three games to go to see what the 2019 Packers will look like. Starters should play more next game! Until then GO PACK GO!
