Packer 2014 Rookie Tryout Camp

58 players are attending the Packer 2014 rookie camp!  That is all the draft choices (9), the players not drafted, but signed by the Packers, and other players!

One of the chances the Pack is taking is on the University of Oregon player - Colt Lyeria

While Lyerla's character history presents a major issue for the NFL, his track record as a player and athlete are difficult to ignore. At 6-4 and 242 pounds, he ran a 4.61 40-yard dash at the combine and was considered one of the best athletes at his position available in the draft. In 2012, his last full season at Oregon under Kelly, he caught 25 passes for 392 yards and six touchdowns.

This  is a second chance for a young man that made a BIG mistake!  The mistake:

In the weeks after his dismissal from Oregon for a violation of team rules last year, Lyerla was charged with cocaine possession and compounded the problem by running from police.

Wow!  Hope this young man has turned things around!

McCarthy talks about the camp at PackerNews

Out of 58, can the Packers get 10 players?  Hope so!

The Packers have a recent history under Ted Thompson of draft a wide receiver at #2!  To back this up, look at the article:

Deja Vu: The Packers Take

Wide Receiver Davante Adams

in the Second Round

According to the article, Thompson has picked:
2005 Terrence Murphy (Suffered career ending neck injury)
2006 Greg Jennings (Some nice seasons)
2008 Jordy Nelson (Still a weapon)
2011 Randall Cobb (Becoming a game changer!)

Davante Adams
Fresno St.
Wide Receiver  6'1"  - 212 lbs.

The Packer #2 pick this year Davante Adams seems to have some of the skills to allow Aaron Rogers to find one more target to drive opponents defenses crazy!  Some scary stats:

In 2 years, Adams amassed - 233 receptions, 3,3031 yards and 30 TD's!

Average speed (4.56 in the 40), but can jump - 39.5 vertical jump!  Apparently has the ability to get separation, strong hands, and competitive!  Looks like a good replacement for recently departed James Jones!

With Cobb, Nelson, and emerging Boykin, Adams will need to earn his spot on the roster!  And remember, we drafted 2 other wide receivers & have four other receivers on the roster!  So, if you are counting, and I am, that is 10!  Yes ten receivers for 5-6 slots!

Let the competition begin!

A Look At 2014 Green Bay Packer Draft - #1 Pick - Ha Ha Clinton-Nix

Time to look at each player in the Packer Draft.  The Packers #1 pick - Ha Ha Clinton-Nix.

Going into the 2014 season one thing was obvious, the Packers needed safety help!  That need was attacked by drafting Alabama's Ha Ha Clinton-Dix!  What can we expect?

6'1" - 208 lbs
40 yard time - 4.58
Bench Press - 225 pounds - 11 times
Vertical Jump 33 inches

The "experts" all seem to agree, that Ha Ha Clinton-Dix was one of the best safeties in the draft class of 2014.  The Packers, needed a safety, and according the the Packer brain trust, the football experts, Clinton-Dix is the man!  Only time will tell!!

Check out the websites below and see if you agree!

24 Hours Before The NFL 2014 Draft

Finally!  24 Hours Before The NFL 2014 Draft!  May is way to long to wait!  But, there is always room for more predictions!  Here we go!

#1 - Mel Kiper will NOT get Round One of the draft perfect!

#2 - IN fact, nobody on ESPN will get it right!

#3 - Johnny Manziel with be….  either  …. VERY VERY GOOD or a BUST!

#4 - Jadeveon Clowney with be….  either  …. VERY VERY GOOD or a BUST!

#5 - A QB will be selected in round 6 or 7 that will be one of the BEST!

#6 - The Packers will trade ……….. DOWN for more picks!

#7 - This will be Ted Thompson's last draft.

#8 - The Packers will pick a safety! (IS THIS A SAFE PREDICTION!)

#9 - The Packers will NOT pick a QB.

#10 - By Saturday we will all be sick of the draft!

Packer Draft 2014 - Nine Picks

Four days to go!  Nine selections!  And four picks in the top 100!

Round 1, #21 overall
Round 2, #53
Round 3, #85
Round 3, #98 (compensatory selection)
Round 4, #121
Round 5, #161
Round 5, #176 (compensatory selection)
Round 6, #197
Round 7, #236

The last 3-4 months, all the experts has made their predictions, and here is my prediction - most will get it wrong!  The draft is a great way to waste time on the NFL Network, ESPN, football magazines, etc!

Here is Captain Obvious comments, that anybody who watched the Packers can see and you do not have to be an NFL general manager, Mel Kiper, or a retired NFL Hall of Fame member!

#1 - Safety
The Packer safety play has been terrible the last 2-3 years!  Lack of big plays, interceptions & poor tackling are one reason the Packer defense has ranked as one of the poorest NFL defenses.  I have said before, I do not think it is a "Scheme" thing.  I put the blame here on our General Manager - Ted Thompson.  NO TALENT!

#2 - Tight End
For me, the Jermichael Finley experiment is over!  The latest injury solidifies that for me!  And the Packer backup tight ends are fine for special teams, but do not take advantage of the ability of our quarterback!  As mentioned above - NO TALENT!

#3 - Inside & Outside linebackers.  Injuries have hurt us the last 2-3 years!  Matthews MUST stay healthy.  The Michael Neal experiment I think is over, I say he is a Defensive End.  The BJ Raji experiment is over, I say he is a nose tackle, NOT a defensive end.  And the draft selections of Nick Perry & Datone Jones have not impacted the play on the field!  So here, I blame both Capers & Thompson.  NO TALENT & PLAYERS OUT OF POSITION!

Now we must give some credit to some personnel decisions - Casey Hayward at corner, Micah Hyde at corner/safety, AJ Hawk has for his ability played great(AND STAYS HEALTHY!)  The offensive line seems to be coming together, although worried about center!

So, it is not all doom & gloom!  We still have I think the best QB in the league!  And wide receivers that are players.  The running game is I think one of the best in the NFL!  BUT, we need two things:

#1 - STAY HEALTHY

#2 - one or two players from this Draft!

Packer Special Team Players - Punter - Kicker - Long Snapper!

OK, first a comment from an old timer!  THESE GUYS USED TO BE FOOTBALL PLAYERS!

When I was growing up, my first view of a kicker or punter was, they were just a wide receiver or an offensive lineman that punted or kicked!  NO MORE!  Now we even have a guy on every team that just snaps the football for punts or kicks!

First, you usually do not draft these guys!  They are picked up after the draft!

Little trivia - In last last 20 years, the highest punter was drafted in round 3!
2012 - Bryan Anger  - Jaguars
2005 - Dustin Colquitt - Chiefs
2004 - BJ Sander - Packers!!!!!
1997 - Brad Maynard - Giants
1993 - Harold Alexander - Falcons

Ray Guy in 1973 was the first punter EVER selected in Round 1!!! By the Raiders!

Punter - Tim Masthay
Ranked 21st in Net Yards
Blocked punts - ZERO
64 Punts 22 inside the Twenty Yard Line

Here is a Punter Ranking which ranks all players & Punters B/R NFL 2013 Punter Ranking:
Masthay was ranked 26th out of 32 punters!

We may need to look at some competition at Punter!
Some top Punters out of College for 2014?
Kirby Van Der Kamp, Iowa State
Pat O'Donnell, Miami
Cody Webster, Purdue

Mason Crosby has a much better season!!!
Mason Crosby was ranked 12th last year in the B/R Kicker Ranking!
But why not bring in a kicker just to get the focus!

Long Snapper - Brett Goode

Checkout the 2013 NFL Long Snapper List!

In a perfect world - NO bad snaps, No missed kicks, and No BAD Punts!
