Building a Champion - Defensive Line

If wide receiver is critical on offense, then defensive line is the next draft focus!!  Here is our short list, remember, we play a 3-4 defense, so, our roster does not need a bunch of big guys!

Montavius Adams - 6'4" - 304 - Year 3

Kenny Clark - 6'3" - 314 - Year 4

Kingsley Keke - 6'3" - 288 - Year Rookie

Tyler Lancaster - 6'3" - 313 - Year 2

Dean Lowry - 6'6" - 296 - Year 4

5 players and no All Pro type!  We have be waiting for Kenny Clark!

Kenny Clark - 6'3" - 314 - Year 4

Remember, Clark was drafted young, 19-20 out of college.  He has shown glimmers of greatness.  This is the season, BECAUSE next year he is a free agent.  You know what that means, 10-15 million per year & salary cap!!!  (DO NOT FORGET - we need to sign David Bakhtiari also next year - see how easy it is to break the bank!)  So, WE NEED a giant season out of Clark!

Dean Lowry - 6'6" - 296 - Year 4

Another good starter, but not not great.  He is a good starter and with his size can take up space!  Also, athletic & smart (Northwestern grad)  Will be another key part of a Packer Playoff run!

Tyler Lancaster - 6'3" - 313 - Year 2

A backup at best, but needed to play a bunch of football last year!  He is adequate as a fill in and at times is able to make a play, but the Packers must upgrade!

Next two players must earn their roster spot!  Adams has had his chance, but we need more!  Keke is still very raw and the pre-season will be critical!

Montavius Adams - 6'4" - 304 - Year 3

Kingsley Keke - 6'3" - 288 - Year Rookie

So, what does YOUR GUT tell you?  We NEED a starter from the draft!  Or, a project!  But, the ad in the paper should read:

WANTED
Space Eater
Run Stopper
(REMEMBER THE 49er GAME!)
A big boy, that is not easy to move and
will sack a QB on occasion!
Plus - All the food you can eat!

Building a Champion - Offensive Line

The heart & soul of an offense is the offensive line!  What is left for 2020?

David Bakhtiari - T - 6'4" - 310 - Year 7
Our leader and now that Bulaga is gone, our locker room leader.  All Pro, this guy is worth every
penny we pay him!  Has been a team guy, an Aaron Buddy, and has that swagger to be the MAN!  Every great offense line has a great left tackle - this is David!

Elgton Jenkins - C - 6'5" - 311 - Year Rookie
It could be argued, this was our BEST draft pick last year!  He stepped into the starting roll and
did a VERY good job!  He seems to be a player that could be here 5-7 years!

Corey Linsley - C - 6'3" - 301 - Year 6
Has been a very good, dependable for the past 6 years!  This may be his last, next year a free agent!  So, enjoy 2020.  Packer Fans are very happy to have Corey for one more year!

Billy Turner - G/T - 6'5" - 310 - Year 6
A veteran pick up & did a good job last year holding the line together.  Seems to fit in well and will be an asset for another Super Bowl run!  Thank You Billy!

Rick Wagner - T - 6'6" - 315 - Year 7
Losing Brian Bulaga & adding Rick Wagner.  This was strictly a financial decision - Bulaga signed for about $10 million a year and Wagner was half the price.  Both have had injury issues, can Wagner be the MAN at right tackle?

Alex Light - G/T - 6'5" - 309 - Year 2
If Wagner does not work out, Light may be the next in line.  He filled in well at left & right tackle last year and should be a BIG part of the Packers 2020 season as well!

Lucas Patrick - G - 6'3" - 313 - Year 3
Another important back up from last years team!  He filled in at center and seemed to be a good fit!  In fact, he may eventually be the Linsley replacement?  But, this year, should be an important insurance policy!

Lane Taylor - G - 6'3" - 324 - Year 6
A starter for many seasons, served as a back up after rookie Jenkins played well!  Will the Packers keep Taylor as an insurance policy?  All depends on the Packers choice in their 10 draft picks!

Cole Madison - G - 6'5" - 318 - Year 1
Still a project.  Remember, missed his rookie season for personal reasons.  Last year, did not play very much.  This could be ole's last season?

The next three players are long shots, but, when it comes to offensive line, always a possibility!

Cody Conway - T - 6'6" - 307- Year Rookie

John Legiue - T - 6'6" - 301 - Year Rookie

Yosh Nijman - T - 6'7" - 314 - Year Rookie

Free Agents

I really doubt if Spriggs & Veldheer will come back.  The Spriggs experiment seems to be at the end of the line.  And, Veldheer, time to enjoy retirement!

Jason Spriggs - T - 6'6" - 301 - Year 4

Jared Veldheer - T - 6'8" - 321 - Year 10

I could see the Packers taking an offensive lineman in the 3-4th round.  My guess would be a possible left tackle to groom as Bakhtiari replacement!

Next Up - Packer Defense!

Building a Champion - Wide Receivers

OK, if the Packers have dreams of a Super Bowl victory, the 2020 draft MUST produce a starting wide receiver!  And, not only a starter, but a SPEED receiver - STRETCH the field!!  So, what do we have????

Davante Adams - 6'1" - 215 - Year 6

This is the Packers man.  He is consistent.  He is a team player.  Last year stats:
383 receptions - 997 yards - 5 TD's (And, only y played 12 of 16 games)

Adams will be there for 2020.  He has proven to be one the NFL's finest.  Adams needs help.

Allen Lazard - 6'5" - 227 - Year 1

Lazard flashed some ability is 2019.  With his height & toughness, his talent was enough to
show he belongs in the NFL.  Lazard should make more noise in 2020!  He stats:
35 receptions - 477 yards - 3 TD's

This receiver will be an important past of the 2020 team and if he is able to take those stats up
a notch, the Packer Offense will be starting to scare people again!

Devin Funchess - 6'4" - 225 - Year 5

A free agent pick up that is a gamble, but not a big gamble.  With the release of Jimmy Graham
and the side of Funchess at 6'4 & 225 pounds, he may get those throws & more!  Had some good
years for the Panthers playing with an inconsistent Cam Newton. Only played in one game for Colts
last year in 2019.
His best year with the Panthers was 2017.  Stats:
63 receptions - 840 yards - 8 TD's

We need that kind of year this year for the Pack.  Remember, out of college Funchess was a tight end and we may see the majority of the passes to Funchess in the tight end role.

Marquez Valdes-Scantling - 6'4" - 206 - Year 2

This is a do or die year for Valdes-Scantling.  Good size, great speed, needs to be great in 2020.
26 receptions - 452 yards - 2 TD's

Equanimeous St. Brown - 6'5" - 214 - Year 2

Injured all of 2019, St. Brown will have one more opportunity.

Jake Kumerow - 6'4" - 209 - Year 2

This is one receiver you would love to see succeed!  From a small college, a walk on & taking the
difficult road!  Has the size, the speed, and hands to be a bonus!  WHY NOT!

12 receptions for 219 yards - 1 TD

Darrius Shepherd - 5'11" - 186 - Rookie

Malik Taylor - 6'2" - 6'2" - 216 - Rookie

Reggie Begelton - 6'0" - 200 lbs - Year 1

Free Agent

Ryan Grant - 6'0" - 194 - Year 6

This list could be SOOOOOOOO much better with just ONE addition.  A receiver with SPEED & EVASIVENESS! Just one!

It is time that the Packers get
Aaron Rodgers a home run hitter!!!!

Building A Champion - Tight Ends

If I were to pick one area of frustration the last 10 years, the Packer Tight Ends may be my first choice!  How about a look back!

Go Back to Super Bowl Season in 2010 - Jermichael Finley, OH, do you remember, he did not play, he finished the season on the Injured Reserve!  The Packers Super Bowl winning roster tight Ends:

Tom Crabtree
Donald Lee
Andrew Quarless

These three players were NOT All Pros, but served the purpose!  So, you can win a Super Bowl without a stud tight end.

Look at the last 10 years:

Season 2011 - Tom Crabtree, Jermichael Finley, Ryan Taylor, DJ Williams
Season 2012 - Tom Crabtree, Jermichael Finley, Ryan Taylor, DJ Williams
Season 2013 - Andrew Quarless, Jake Stoneburner, Ryan Taylor
Season 2014 - Brandon Bostick, Justin Perillo, Andrew Quarless, Richard Rodgers
Season 2015 - Kennard Backman, Justin Perillo,  Richard Rodgers
Season 2016 - Jared Cook, Richard Rodgers
Season 2017 - Emanuel Byrd, Lance Kendricks, Richard Rodgers
Season 2018 - Jimmy Graham, Lance Kendricks, Mercedes Lewis, Robert Tonyan
Season 2019 - Jimmy Graham, Mercedes Lewis, Robert Tonyan, Jace Sternberger

Overall, last 10 years, a lost decade!  We had some moments.  Finley was promising, but injuries and a head case.  Jared Cook was a great pick up, BUT, we let him go - OPPS!  Richard Rodgers had a moment (Hail Mary from Aaron), but fumbled onside kick to lose a NFC Championship to Seattle!

So, our 2020 team so far?
Mercedes Lewis, Evan Baylis, James Looney, Jace Sternberger, Robert Tonyan

Lewis is the leader and we signed him for one more season.  Sternberger, injured most of the rookie season, is our biggest hope!  He could be an answer, but so far, we have no clue!  Tonyan, special teams at best.  Baylis & Looney, no.

So, we NEED to draft another.  Look at the two Super Bowl Teams - 49ers - Kittle, Chiefs - Kelce.
They were not household names draft day, but they are playmakers!  They both play with an edge!  They both are athletic!  They both can get down the field!  Not fancy, but GOOD!

The 2020 Packer team needs a tight end!!

Building A Champion - Packers Quarterbacks & Running Backs

As of today, we have great problem, Aaron Rodgers & Aaron Jones.

I say this EVERY YEAR - to go from Brett Favre to Aaron Rodgers, WOW!  Packer Fans have been blessed at the quarterback position for MANY years!!! 1992 to 2020!  That will be 29 years!

I said:

29 years  -   WOW!

So, Aaron Rodgers.  He is special, BUT, he is human!  At times he hold the ball too long & if you saw him on Jeopardy, his is NERDY!  He is a thinker.  His battle with his parents over religion is a prime example - Christian Faith vs world beliefs - Aaron Rodgers is a DEEP thinker!  But, I will definitely enjoy the rest of his career as a Packer!  My issue?  THE BACKUP QUARTERBACK!  This has been an issue for the last few years!  Now, we have Tim Boyle  (year 2) & Manny Wilkins (Rookie)  - this is scary!

Running backs Aaron Jones & Jamaal Williams are a great 1-2 punch!  Aaron Jones stats - 1084 yards & 16 TD's - 49 receptions & 3 TD's!  WOW!  Jamaal Williams stats - 460 yards & 1 TD - 39 receptions & 5 TD's!  WOW!  1 - 2 Punch!  Backups - Dexter Williams, Damarea Crockett, Tyler Ervin, & Fullback - Malcolm Johnson.  Tyler Ervin was just signed, showed promise in the return game & started to play some offense.  Has some of that "shiftiness" we NEED in our offense!  The other players we really do not know!

Therefore, out of our 10 draft choices, I would try a running back.  Probably not until after the 4rth round!

Time To Get Ready For The 2020 NFL Draft - Packers Needs - The "Eyeball Test!"

OK!  Lets be real!  What does the "Eyeball Test" tell us about the Packers of 2019?

1 - One win away from the Super Bowl! A NFC North Division Champ!  A 13-3 record!

A lot to be happy about!  But, and there is always a BUT, if you watched a lot of the games, some close games & some moments of UGLY!    So, NOT a time for panic, BUT, a time for focus!

2 - Focus - HELP for Aron Rodgers!  The playmakers - Davante Adams & Aaron Jones.
HELP - Tight End & Wide Receiver!  Let's NOT be greedy - just a wide receiver with SPEED would
be awesome!  Someone to stretch the field!  Someone that is a threat when he catches a 5 yard pass to go ALL the way!  Someone to complete Adams.  And, then, a BIG target - Tight End.  Controls the middle of the field!  Is a RED ZONE touchdown threat!  THIS, would make a good 13-3 team even better!

3 - Offensive Line - Bulaga is gone!  We seemed to have hit on guard Jenkins last year!
Elgton at 6'5" - 311 pounds made the all rookie team!  In the 2nd round with the 44th pick, we have a starter!  We need that to happen this year at right tackle!

4 - Defense!  Did you see the last game, the 49ers passed the ball 8 times for the game!
EIGHT TIMES!  EIGHT TIMES!  EIGHT TIMES!  EIGHT TIMES!  EIGHT TIMES!

8 PASSES!  8 PASSES!  8 PASSES!  8 PASSES!  8 PASSES!  8 PASSES!  8 PASSES!  8 PASSES!

Does that tell you enough!  So, how about an inside linebacker tackling machine & a BIG DT!
I MEAN BIG BIG RUN STOPPER

So, Inside Line Backer & Defensive Tackle!  If we do that, the young defensive backs have another year to get better & maybe even become all pro type players, I'm thinking Alexander at corner and
Savage at safety!

So, VERY simply, we have 10 Draft picks - we NEED!

Packers 2020 draft picks

  • Round 1, Pick 30
  • Round 2, Pick 62
  • Round 3, Pick 94
  • Round 4, Pick 126
  • Round 5, Pick 158
  • Round 6, Pick 173 (from Las Vegas Raiders)
  • Round 6, Pick 190
  • Round 7, Pick 202 (from Cleveland Browns)
  • Round 7, Pick 220 (from Baltimore Ravens)
A Wide Receiver

Donovan Peoples-Jones – Michigan
Donovan Peoples-Jones was a five-star recruit coming out of college that never really lived up to his potential. Michigan’s offense didn’t do him a whole lot of favors, but he also lacks the speed to be an outside receiver. Speed is what the Packers need, so I don’t think Peoples-Jones would be the only receiver they would draft, but he could help provide some depth at the position.
Michael Pittman Jr. – USC
Pittman is a big receiver who can get physical with opposing defensive backs. His release off the line needs some work, but he’d be lining up opposite of one of the best in the league when it comes to releasing off the line of scrimmage. Pittman could be a good WR2 for the Packers.
Chase Claypool – Notre Dame
Claypool has a good combination of speed and size. He can be a vertical threat on the outside, taking the top off of defenses, something Packers fans have wanted for a long time. He can also make strong, contested catches over the middle of the field, playing out of the slot. He’s a physical receiver who can handle ‘handsy’ defensive backs.
Tyler Johnson – Minnesota
A dependable receiver who will likely fall in the draft to the later rounds. If the Packers can snag him late, they could find a hidden gem in the draft. He’s not the most physically gifted receiver, but he’s smart and knows how to use his body to get open and make catches. He could make a solid slot receiver and provide some much-needed depth to the position for the Packers.
Quintez Cephus – Wisconsin
Has the body of an NFL receiver. Won’t blow by defenders, but a solid route-runner and sure-handed. Like Johnson, he knows how to use his body to ‘box out’ defenders and get in a good position to make a catch. He’s also been known to make some difficult catches in some big games.
A Tight End

Cole Kmet – Notre Dame
Kmet is another receiving tight end. He can go up and grab contested ‘jump balls’ and can be tough to bring down after he makes the catch. His blocking is overly polished and he needs to bulk up a bit to be an NFL tight end but could be another weapon for Matt LaFleur and Aaron Rodgers.
Bryce Hopkins – Purdue
Hopkins could be a player the Packers can snag late. He isn’t the most talented tight end in the draft, but he is productive. He earned First Team All-America and First Team All-Big Ten honors as well as earning the Big Ten Tight End of the Year award. His athleticism is limited and he will drop the ball on occasion, but he can produce, which is something the Packers have been looking for.
Thaddeus Moss – Louisiana State
The third-round pick of my pre-Combine mock draft, Moss is the type of tight end that I think the Packers could use, especially if Lewis moves on. He made some big plays for LSU in their championship season, but he is really a more accomplished blocker than receiver. I think he would fit in nicely with Sternberger, forming a tandem similar to Graham and Lewis.
A Defensive Tackle

Neville Gallimore – Oklahoma
Gallimore may be more of an interior defensive lineman, but you can’t have enough of those either. He could come in and provide some relief inside and move Clark to end for a few plays. Gallimore has a high motor and is a good pass rusher from the interior of the line. He could provide some solid depth to this defensive line.
James Lynch – Baylor
Lynch could turn into a steal in the draft. Coming out of Baylor as their all-time sack leader, Lynch knows how to get to the QB. He isn’t the biggest or most athletically gifted player, but he has a high motor and puts maximum effort into every play.
Raekwon Davis – Alabama
Another pipe dream, but you never know, if Davis were to fall to the Packers in the second round, I think they’d have a hard time passing him up. A senior out of Alabama, he is an athletic freak for his size. If the Packers could snag him, their defensive line would be immediately improved.
An Inside Linebacker

Troy Dye – Oregon
Dye is close to the prototypical linebacker in the NFL these days. He has a high football IQ and great sideline-to-sideline speed. He doesn’t miss a whole lot of tackles and has the ability to cover or blitz. One knock on Dye would be his size. He isn’t the biggest linebacker and would likely need to bulk up a bit.
Kenneth Murray – Oklahoma
Murray would be my dream pick. He has what Martinez lacks. Speed. In today’s NFL, you need speed on defense. Murray is a very talented linebacker who is consistently in the backfield. Over his last two seasons, he averaged 15 tackles for a loss. He does get out of position occasionally while trying to make plays or being aggressive, but overall he is one of the top linebackers in the draft. Keep an eye on him.
Patrick Queen – LSU
Queen is the latest linebacker from the LSU factory. He is fast and physical and can diagnose plays quickly. He has the ability to stop the run and play coverage effectively. He and Murray are the cream of the crop at linebacker and I think the Packers need to try to snag one of them.
Zack Baun – Wisconsin
Wisconsin fans know Baun and know that he played outside linebacker last season. But Baun is big enough that he could slide over to inside linebacker. He would be much better in coverage and has shown he can blitz with effectiveness. This would be similar to moving Clay Matthews inside.
As I see it, in the top 100 picks we have 3 - #30, #62, & #94.  Out of all the athletes in college football are we able to pick 2-3 starters and 2-3 quality backups for 2020??

YES!

2020 Free Agency is Winding Down, Where Are the Packers?

End of March, March Madness Canceled, because of Corona Madness!  Where is the 2020 Packer Roster as of March 26, 2020?

New Additions:

ILB - Christian Kirksey
OT - Rick Wagner
WR - David Funchess

Re-signed:

TE - Mercedes Lewis
S - Will Redmond
K - Mason Crosby

Key Loses:

ILB - Blake Martinez
OT - Brian Bulaga
FB - Danny Vitale
TE - Jimmy Graham
DT - Tyler Lancaster

So, look at that list, is the 2020 team better?  Time will tell, but.....

ILB - Kirksey for Martinez
If Kirksey stays healthy, he is a better athlete.  Martinez was a great leader and made tackles, but they were 5-6 yards downfield!  This could be better?

OT - Wagner for Bulaga
Wagner is younger, Bulaga WAS better, but injury issues last few years.  Bulaga demanded 10 million a year, Pack could not afford!  So, more cap space, & younger, but are we better?

TE - Graham gone, Lewis re-signed.
Graham was an expensive flop.  Lewis is a great blocker & team leader.  This is a plus, BUT we need more help.  Funchess is really a TE, playing WR.  This may help?

Crosby resigned, this is GOOD!
Lancaster resigned, he is a backup at best.
Redmond is additional defensive back depth.

So, the Packers have very little cap space, a reality.  About $12 million left, about half will go
to the draft choices.

Bottom line, we need 2-3 starters out of this draft!  My hope:

Starting WR
Starting TE
Starting OT
